Introduction
Nevada’s capital calls itself, “A city dominated by its setting,” and indeed the backdrop for this once frontier town is spectacular. Between the Sierra Nevada, the Pine Nut Mountains and the Great Basin Desert this is a place of big beauty. Named for the Carson River and the scout and hunter/trapper Kit Carson, who also fought Native Americans during the expansion, the city was founded before the state of Nevada became part of the Union in 1864. Part of the mining and railroad boom, Carson City developed into one of the smallest population state capitals in the US. Today the city is a hub of Nevada’s activity with Lake Tahoe just half an hour away and all the Wild West has to offer within a day trip.
